Need ideas for getting a gift for a 21 year old female college student?

Here are the details. I am buying a birthday gift for this student, whom I don't know. She has no home of her own; she lives in a a home for children/young people because for various reasons they don't have a suitable home environment, and are now living in the group home run by a church denomination..

There are certain guidelines that I have to follow. The gift or gifts cannot cost more than $12. I don't know any clothing sizes so I can't buy anything like a shirt. I do not know what her hobbies or interests are. I would personally like to spend more than $12, but cannot because they want the gifts to be "even" - they don't want a child next month getting $50 in gifts while this child only gets $12.

I will not be meeting her or giving her the gift personally.

I am probably leaving something out, so please feel free to ask questions. Thanks for specific ideas

I'm a 21 year old college student myself and I think a pretty journal/notebook would be an ideal gift.

I've been dating this guy for 3 months. We're both poor college students. His 35th is tomorrow and so far all i did was get his cross fixed and supply a chain($15). i have no idea what else to get him, and no cash for anything else. I could charge another item but is this enough? FYI, he got me flowers for my birthday. If i do need to grab something else give me a suggestion

I think that gift is just right, and it's the thought that counts! If you really want to give a little extra, buy or make him a card and share some of your favorite memories/inside jokes with one another. Or pamper him a little with a delicious homemade birthday cake! That should hit the spot :)
