How to decorate my gold Christmas tree with things to honor the real reason for the season: Jesus Christ?

We bought a gold Christmas tree last year after Christmas was over for half off... I have no interest in having anything Santa around until my children are old enough to understand the real reason for this season is Jesus Christ. So I want to decorate my house and tree to honor Jesus but really don't have any good ideas. I'm also interested in being creative and making our own decorations is a possibility.

You should read the book There Really Is A Santa Clause- The History of Saint Nicholas & Christmas Holiday Traditions by William J. Federer. I am reading it right now, and it gives the origins of many Christmas traditions (most of which are NOT Christian). It has been an interesting read for me (I am a Christian) to see that so many of the symbols we use- even those that are NOT Santa related- are of pagan origin. I have not finished the book yet, but I have already found myself evaluating our traditions. I do not intend to eliminate our use of a Christmas tree or wreath, etc., but it has made me reconsider some things. (More below on that)

As for what you can use- I think on a gold tree, white would look great (I say this because we have a miniature white tree that we put gold decorations on and it looked lovely). Stars, angels, crosses, doves, candy canes, bells, etc. Since the song the "12 days of Christmas" has things that symbolized different aspects of Christianity when people could not openly celebrate, you might use some of those on your tree.

You might look at Family Christian Bookstores- my most recent catalog has some decorations in it, several for only $5.98 that I intend to get. One says on the front "I hope your longest list..." and on the back it says "is the one that counts your Blessings" (or something similar to that). Another says "It was never about the gifts..." on the front and has "It is about the presence" on the back. I can not recall what the third says, but it is similar.

Bronners, I think it is, is a Christmas store that also has a website you can order from. They have some lovely ornaments- some of which are Christian in nature. I love one they have that says NOEL on it, with Night Of Everlasting Love on it.

Pack-O-Fun is a publication we use in our homeschool, for arts and crafts and a monthly geography lesson. It has holiday themed crafts, and the current issue is probably full of ideas for things you can make. You can also look up the generic salt-dough ornament recipe and make your own- we bought 100+ cookie cutters from Wal Mart (in the arts and crafts section) that we use. It is a lot of fun.

There are so many beautiful Christmas cards, with both pictures and words, that are often just thrown away. You can use a hole puncher to punch a hole, and then use ribbon to make a hanger for it and put it on the tree. You can also just stick them on the tree. You can also use scissors with a ribbony edge and cut out the sentiments from the inside of the card and hang those.

Visit your local arts and crafts store- they have a TON of crafts for Christmas right now.

Back to the pagan origins, Christ's birthday is not December 25- I am sure you know that. It is when we CELEBRATE hsi birth, but "we" (Christians back then) chose that date because it fell near the winter solstice, a popular pagan feast. "We" then converted many pagan rituals into Christian ones, including the Christmas tree and such. I was recently discussing the book I mentioned above with a friend (a pastor's wife) and she mentioned how the Bible does not tell us to celebrate His birth, anyhow- only his resurrection. That gave me more to consider.

I have decided that the Bible also does not tell us to celebrate OUR births, but we do, and while many of the symbols are of pagan origin, they have no pagan meaning to me- the same as while Halloween may have originated as an evil holiday, it is not such to us (we do not decorate or dress in a scary manner, nor do we go trick or treating, but we do go to costume parties/fall festivals...

"Santa" also comes to our house, though our children do nto "believe" in him. One thing I am considering changing is to do the "Santa" thing in early December, rather than on CHristmas, so that Christmas can be solely to glorify God. Santa, though, comes from Saint Nicholas, a real bishop that the whole secret-gift-giving in the night is based upon and it is a great story for the children (and I see nothing wrong with it, personally, but to each their own).

does he have an ipod touch? they're expensive, around two hundred dollars, but if you bought him one with a twenty five dollar gift card and some earphones he'd love you. if you consider this get skullcandy earphones, they're the best. im 14 and everyone has an ipod where i live; i got one last year and it was the best present i've ever gotten besides my ps3 and xbox.

if he doesn't have call of duty: black ops or mw3 you could get him that (though he probably already has it), but ask him if he likes it first. don't waste your money. another good game is assassin's creed 3 and elder scrolls: skyrim on xbox 360. this is my personal opinion but don't get mass effect 3 (a game that came out recently). the endings are terrible. dragonage 1 is a good game, but dragonage 2 is pretty bad. the whole entire time i tried to convince myself that its a good game like the previous but i just couldnt

Try doing music and decorations with home made or store bought gift music CD's for kids, as well as inexpensive toys in a gift bag, plus cake, ice cream, chips, drinks, etc. That should do it, try not to get too crazy or too special, kids have short attention spans, love the "junk" foods, and a few items to chat about, and then on to the next adventure, party, etc. There are all sorts of idea books, in print as well as online, - do a google search, that might give you a few ideas. I have a Geography teacher (a guy) who will be having his birthday in another week or so. He's really funny and out going. He loves computer games and gadgets (especially androids) and board games. He's really special for me so I was thinking about giving him something good. My friend suggested a tie or an ink pen. Would that be good? Or will something else be better?
I am going to bake him cupcakes at his surprise birthday party and make a personal gift consisting of messages saying happy birthday from the whole school. But I think buying another gift would be good touch to the surprise.

I think a hand made gift would be better. Your teacher sounds SOO much like my geography teacher, hes young funny outgoing loves androids and gadgets and for his 31st birthday i got him a bag of hershey kisses cause its his favorite chocolate,although everyone got the wrong idea because they were "kisses" but w.e people are stupid. For christmas i got him an oxford with a tie and he adored it. But my teacher LOVES hand made gifts, make him a card, give him a drawing for example my teacher loves phineas and ferb so i made him a drawing. And for all the others this isnt BRIBING... you just love your teacher and want to show appreciation for all hes done for you... the idea of the globe is bad hes a geo teacher he probably has 50 of those, maybe a collectible or a deco item for his class like those fancy compass roses or a man holding the world etc... good luck

My nephew is about to turn 2, and I don't know what to get him! He has an older sister, so toys have been passed down to him, plus between my family and my sister in law's family, he has a TON of aunts/uncles, etc that will be buying gifts for him. With Christmas around the corner, I know he'll be getting even more toys. What is a great idea for a 2 year old, that he won't likely be getting for someone else?

I like the idea of getting a wine from their birth year. Pricey as ^&$* but how cool! I would do a vintage port from his birth year. Or I would get him a wine that ages great and tell him that you'll be there to drink it with him on his 31st birthday. A bordeaux or Chateauneuf du pape. But if they are not into wines, really, you'd be setting him/her up for dissapointment.

How about a nice picture of you & her together, frame it and put it in a nice bday bag with lots of tissue, also u cud put some little body shop things in it too. Make it like a goodie bag full of little goodies u know she'll like. The soaps from the body shop are always awesome, the different flavoured(smelling) lip glosses are also a great thing to get a lady. Theres lots of really great little things u could fill the bag with, that way its a sentimental (the pic) and useful gift. The body shop also has perfumed oils in all different sizes i think, the small iol bottle is great for the bag and vanilla is loved by all women. Gosh, theres so many ideas but this is the best one i think. Im only 29 (id love this gift if it were from my son) but my mom is 45 and she'd love it too, so I can almost guarantee she'll love this if u get it for her. The pic can be a pic she has already( a pic she adores) and u can just get a copy u can say u want a copy of it then frame the copy 4 her. Dont forget to individually wrap the little gifts in the bag with tissue( wrapping tissue not toilet paper,lol) so she has a few things to unwrap...thats half the fun!! Take care

My sister is turning 40 and I can't think of the just right gift for her. She is married and they are financially very comfortable and she is able to buy pretty much whatever she wants and does. I however am on a pretty small budget but want to get her something special. I have already over done the coupons, massages, scrapbooks, baby sitting offers, etc. I am stumped. Like I said in my previous question I'm considering the Vtech V.Smile V-Motion TV Learning System. But I know there are also other gaming systems out there for his age group too. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm not trying to get him to be one of those kids that play games all the time, but so far he hasn't played any and I think he'd really like something like that. I can tell you *don't* buy the Fisher Price Smart Cycle. My 4 year old was so bored with that really quick (however I guess it did teach him to pedal). Like I mentioned in my other question, the Computer Cool School has been fun and educational, but honestly I'm not seeing those near as often as I used to. Not sure if they are still making them or if games are hard to find or not.

My 4 year old's very favorite toy is his ride on Lightning McQueen. He loves that thing and rides it everytime we play out side, that's been the biggest hit for a gift ever. Not sure if that's something in the price range you were looking for or not though - and it's not very educational, lol, but it's FUN!

Or what about a bike? Does he have one with training wheels yet?

I dunno, as far as other gift ideas. . .if your 4 year old is anything like mine a cardboard box makes him happy. He's never met a toy he doesn't like. :-)

The best thing you can by for her is a gift card, that way she can use it and purchase what she likes. As a college student, she can use the card to purchase items she needs for college because many students do not have a lot of money and a gift card can go a long way for something she needs for her personal use.

What/should I buy my son who has passed away for his first birthday?

my son passed away last year and he would be 1 in April my partner and i and some family are letting balloons go at the beach which we will write on and i brought a blue candel to light for the day. he has his ashes , a photo, his blanket, his candel and a little thing saying "i love you" on his little table thing like a memorial table should i buy him a little gift and sit it up there too? I'm sorry for your loss. It is wonderful that you want to make a special memorial for your son's birthday. Would you consider buying a gift for a children's hospital in your son's memory? And putting a picture of it on the table?

We lost a sibling (as a youth) and our family has observed occasions by making a gift in his memory to a program that helps kids like him. It helped us to know that we were making others happier even in our time of sadness. Aside from losing him, our greatest regret was that we couldn't help him get his wish to be an organ donor so he could help others.

Also, would you consider scattering flower petals or flower leis (I'm from Hawaii) instead of releasing balloons? If you do release balloons, they should be 100% latex and not plastic or mylar, and have biodegradeable string and not nylon or metallic ribbons or attachments. Releasing butterflies or doves is another option in some areas.

A couple of other ideas: plant a tree in his memory, or donate one to your arborist society so they can plant it; or donate some children's books to your local library or school.

I'm sure that whatever you decide to do is fine. Do take care of yourself :) And when you are on the beach, do take a moment to close your eyes and smell the sea air and feel the salt spray and listen to the waves and the wind. You'll remember that moment and think of your son, and I hope it brings you peace.
