Sally

I am looking for a unique birthday gift for my aunt, who I am really close with. I want to get something cool and unique that she will really love. Maybe even something sentimental. Here is some information about my aunt:
-She is going to be moving to San Francisco with her new husband soon.
-She is really into Sci-Fi shows (eg. The X-Files, The Twilight Zone, etc.)
-She loves antique and vintage things.
-She is a really intellectual person who reads a lot.
-She is into a lot of small time bands and different kinds of music.
-She likes going wine tasting.
-She is into independent and foreign films.
-She loves fashion (especially shoes).
-She loves trying different types of food and experiencing different cultures.
-She is very worldly and in tune with global news.
-She is feminine and girly.

Answer
Maybe you could find her some antique furniture. My mother found me some & it was pretty much not that expensive

What are some birthday gift ideas for a girl turning 16?

Helena

She's a really nice girl, but I haven't talked to her in a while considering we both lead busy lives. I want to get something really special for her because she's been in and out of the hospital for something they can't diagnose so do you guys have any ideas?

I don't think she'll be driving just an FYI.

I was thinking maybe a gift basket with 16 chick flicks? Or maybe a spa kit?

Answer
a spa kit is nice but here are some more options :) :
- you can ask her mom / dad what their daughter likes. then make her a "gift of favorites". like for example the gift box should include a tee or a dress of her favorite color, a cd/dvd of her favorite band, her candies and chocolates of her favorite flavor, teen make-up of her favorite shade etc

-Lip-gloss, make-up products....

- a t-shirt with a message

- a journal for her adult years to write memories

- a pen with her name and or the date of her sixteenth birthday engraved in

- locket

- a cake

I hope i help! good luck ;)

when is the bday of superman?

girlygirl

Answer
One of the most beloved characters in comic book history, Superman was created in 1938 by artist Joe Shuster and writer Jerry Siegel

http://www.who2.com/superman.html
---
t was an old piece of information given in Julie Schwartz's "Answer Man" letter columns that Superman's birthday was on February 29th - meaning that Superman only had a birthday once every four years!

Apparently, this is Superman's equivalent birthday according to the earth calendar; Krypton's calendar was slightly different, with eighteen Kryptonian years for every twenty-five years on Earth. Presumably, Superman also has a Kryptonian date for his birth that he celebrates, just as Jewish children have a birthday in the Hebrew calendar (where one's bar mitzvah is celebrated) and a birthday in the Western calendar.

This date of February 29th was not always his birthday, however. During the Golden Age, Superman's birth on Kryptonopolis was in October, according to ACTION COMICS #149 (1950).

What is even more interesting is the idea that Superman and Clark Kent have different birthdays!

SUPERMAN #249 (1972) by Cary Bates (which is incidentally also the first appearance of Terra-Man), has Superman succumbing to emotional problems that Kryptonians get on their sixth birthday. This date cannot be correct, however, as that would mean that Superman is then celebrating his 24th Birthday instead of the traditional 29 years of age! Assuming Bates made an error here, if he was 29 through most of his hero years, come this 1972 issue, it must mean he is 32, or having celebrated eight birthdays.

Superman gets another birthday in Alan Moore's SUPERMAN ANNUAL #11 (1985) which means that around the time of the Reboot, Superman was around 36 earth years old, and this was his ninth birthday. This annual also brings to mind one of the funniest questions of Earth-1: what DO you buy for Superman, anyway? Not since Bouncing Boy's quest to outdo the other male Legionnaires and search for a present to win the hand of Dream Girl, was there a more brain-rattling gift conundrum!

This slightly revised timeline fits in with the dates we have for Supergirl. Shortly after Kara Zor-El's appearance on earth, she has a birthday party and is stated to be "sixteen." If five years passed from the 1960s to the 1970s, that would mean that Supergirl is 21 Earth-years old in Paul Kupperberg's NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERGIRL and her death in CRISIS, which makes her fashoin model and actress career brief but entirely plausible.

Interestingly, Clark Kent has a different birthday than Superman: According to SUPERMAN #263 (1973), Kent's birthday is June 18th. This was stated as being the date that Superman arrived on Earth, his "Earthday." In ACTION COMICS #241 (1958) it is learned that Superman celebrates the date of his coming to earth as well as his "true" birthday (because apparently every four years doesn't quite cut it). The date at the beginning of #241 is given as June 10, 1958, and that Superman's "Earthday" must have several days leeway from here. This is consistent with the June 18th date that was later given.

(Intriguingly, this is also consistent with the anniversary of Superman in the "real" world, where the first issue of ACTION COMICS appeared on the stands in June 1938!)

In Superboy's sixteenth (or really, fourth) birthday, according to Cary Bates's NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY #1 (1980) it was explained that the Kents placed an extra candle on Superboy's birthday cake in honor of a birthday where he almost was aged by aliens, a reminder of the time he lost.

The only place that we get a YEAR of birth for Superman is in the first "Superman of 2965" story, where it was stated that the original Superman was born in 1920, a suspect date considering that would make Superman's considerably older in his 1960s-1970s appearances. This date also lends significant credence to the theory that the "Superman of 2965" future is the future of Earth-2, not Earth-1, as Earth-1 has the Legion and Earth-2 does not, and also no person seen in the 2965 future (Joker, Batman) does not have equivalents on Earth-1. Also, it should be noted that Earth-2 Superman got married and presumably may have children, whereas Earth-1 Superman never did.

Birthday gift ideas (girls)?

Myst

My best friend is turning 13 and I had the idea of doing 13 different gifts like 1 note to read, 2 slideshows of pictures, 3 favorite pictures (in frames), etc. I have ideas for every number except 4, 7, 9, and 11. I want the 4th one to be something a little more expensive, and the 11th one to be somewhat cheap. Any ideas? Thanks(:

Answer
Cool gift idea!

How about:

11 marbles (or pennies) in a small change purse
9 colored pencils (or colored markers)
7 bags/types of candy
4 books or magazines or music CDs or bracelets or colors of nail polish

Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Birthday gift ideas for a teenage girl?

<3

The title pretty much explains it.
My best friend's 17th birthday is coming up and I am not creative when it comes to gift ideas.
I don't want to get anything really expensive like electronics, and I don't want to get her clothes, because they might not fit or be her taste.
So what are some ideas?
Relatively inexpensive, or even a bunch of little things put together.

Thanks !

Answer
If her ears are peirced you could get earings or lip gloss. Does she wear make-up you could get her make-up and maybe her favorite candy. nail polish. hair clips cute girly stickers. note books with gel pens and maybe necklaces or gift card to her favorite store. Or possible her favorite CD or movie. hope this helps(:

Answer
Sports Gear

If sports rule your boyfriend's life, you might want to find out what his favorite sports and teams are and get him something that fits into that category. For example, your guy might be really into baseball, so getting him a baseball hat might seem like a great idea, but if he's a Boston Red Sox fan, you want to make sure you don't buy him a New York Yankees hat. Or, if he's a hockey fan, getting a basketball jersey might not be the best idea. Look at what he wears, or talk to his friends about his sports likes and dislikes.
Video Games

If your boyfriend is a gamer, there might be no better gift than a video game he doesn't have yet. If there is a big release coming up near his birthday, reserve the game early and let him know (this way, he doesn't buy it himself). Or, if you know there is a big release in the future, reserve it on his birthday, and then give him the gift when the game comes out. If money is an object, many game systems come with a "Best Of" series, which usually runs about $20 cheaper than normally priced video games. These games are a bit older, but they are a good way to get a recent game for a low price.
music Lovers

If he is into music and always seems to be on his MP3 player, you may want to focus on this aspect of his personality. Think about purchasing some nice headphones for him to listen to his music on. There are some nice sound-dampening earphones that won't cost too much. If he has a favorite style of music, put together a mix CD with songs you think he might like. If you are doing this, try to put some songs he might not have heard or bands he doesn't normally listen to.

Or a Guitar :)
Good Luck!

Homemade birthday gift ideas?

Sara

I have a few questions..

My boyfriends birthday is coming up and I Would like to do a homemade girt this year. I was planning on making him a fleece tie blanket and having something embroidered on it to make I more personal, but I don't know what to put on it. Ideas? Also I want to give him something else that ties into the DIY "blanket theme". Again, ideas? And lastly birthday card.. Homemade or store bought with a meaningful message?

Thanks!(:

Hi

Birthday is a special occasion to celebrate and carry significance in a person's life. On such an occasion, presenting a birthday gift for her would make the birthday person feel special and a viable way to capture the moment eternally.

The best gifts are ones that directly think of the recipient, thatâs truly when the thought counts. Message in a Bottle, the unique birthday gift for her are extraordinary and you cannot grab them easily in any gift shop.

Birthday Gift Ideas for my Girlfriend?

Jamie

My partner's birthday is a little more than a month away. I do have some small things bought, but I need some thing more personal. Her and I have very different religious beliefs. I'm not exactly sure what she identifies with, but she's into the tarot cards, pentagrams, spirits. That kind of thing. I'm very much a Christian, so you can see where we would have some problems. Lets just say debates are fun between us...lol. I was thinking about getting her something that would tell her that I respect her. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I love her for who she is. I guess the reason I'm asking this question is because I'm not familiar with those types of religious practices, I not sure what my boundaries are. Thanks for your time and any suggestions.
Good point Legs, I feel like an idiot now...lol. I guess I just have to do a little more research.

Answer
I have the most amazing thing for you (I was looking for gifts for my gal online too) I bumped into this great site : http://gifts.redenvelope.com/necklaces/couples-birthstone-necklace-30001411?viewpos=10&trackingpgroup=rjewl&ref=REDorganicgglbrand_red%2benvelope

They have this silver pendant thing with a heart and two birth stones-the cool thing is you place your birthstone next to hers and this comes with a catchy story card "They say that soul mates are destined from birth, and this necklace illustrates the concept beautifully. Inside the sterling silver pendant are two birthstones, one each for you and your soul mate".

Obviously better jewelery exists and at a better price but this is so original. Anyway I hope you find what you are looking for if this doesn't help (you know sometimes just a letter from the heart, accompanied by an exquisite red rose and a romantic dinner are possibly the best gifts someone could receive-just a thought).

Birthday gift ideas for my friends mom?

Taylor

Shes 42 but acts, and looks more like her early 30s. Very sweet, very fun, always there for me, she's more of a mom to me than my own mother is. I want to get her something special. Any ideas?

Answer
Aw, that's cute haha
Here are some suggestions:
1. try to get something that relates to any inside jokes or fun memories you've had with her. That way, it is something she will forever remember you by because of that one special moment.
2. get something that you two or three (you, your friend, and her mom) can do together. It can really be anything but make it special and fun...like go see some sort of concert or program like Blue Man's Group, and then head out for dinner and some ice cream or something. I mean, objects are nice but it would be more memorable to actually do something she likes together.
3. A lot of my friends like to give their mothers pre-paid passes to nice spas and saunas around where we live...it may be alittle on the expensive side but if she's really that close to you, it may be worth it! It will give her time to herself and maybe one or two of her friends (or even yourself!) and let her get away from everything.

Hope this helped! Lis

Birthday Gift Idea's for Mom's 50th?

KittenCats

Hi! I'm 13 and i really want to get my mom something that she will remember for her 50th birthday. But i want her to have the best birthday and look at me like i the best daughter ever! Please help(:

Thanks. (:

Answer
Get a casual photo of your family & have it blown up to maybe a 5x8 size for framing.

You could have a party for her, surprise or not. Sometimes the pizza places will have a party room free of charge if you have at least 20 people. Might be that they have both pizza & pasta. That's the kind of party we had for my 50th. One all-you-can-eat buffet place in my home town had a party room, & my mother arranged to have a family reunion there.

If you want it to be a surprise, then tell her you're taking her out for pizza or whatever, then when she gets there, everybody's there. Could be both friends & family, even those coming from out of town & maybe you mom's co-workers, too.

However, when it was me, I figured out that a friend was doing a surprise party, & I told her I preferred just a party & not a surprise. I made a game of comic strips from newspapers, using white-out over the punch line for people to fill in with their own, laid out & photocopied from a single page & mailed with invitations. It was a contest, but I should have had everybody just pass them around instead of having judges. I do think one or two games is a good idea. Just give everybody little party favors, though, & not prizes for a contest that somebody has to judge.

I also wanted to do a sing-along for both kids & adults. I wanted to type out & print copies of the words of well-known songs. My friend said we should just ask the kids what they wanted to sing, & they would know the words. It never happened, & the kids just colored at the kids' tables on the pictures these places always provide. You couldn't have it very loud anyway.

Someone made my favorite huge apple cake for me, & that worked fine, cleared with the restaurant when we made the reservations. The restaurant supplied us with a stand & the plates for it by our pre-arrangement. Also, arrange to arrive 30 min. early to put up a few balloons & make sure it's all set up. You can buy or make decorations that say Happy 50th. Just get very few that you can hang & take down in 5-10 min.

This, of course, would be expensive, but in this case, you could get away with getting families to pay their own, with you just furnishing the cake. Or you could furnish pizza, with people paying for their own if they ordered anything else, like salad or pasta. You could also pay for drinks. Just figure out what you can do & let people know on the invitation. Invite about 100 people in order to get 20. That's how it was with me anyway. Let people bring kids because then more will be able to come, & besides, kids are fun sometimes, too.

Be ready, of course, to stand up & say something to the group, thanking them for coming & saying something about your mom, maybe just before singing Happy Birthday & cutting the cake. Your mom would probably want to say something, too. Whatever you each say, make it short, like 1 minute & not 5. Have someone corral the kids away while you're talking. With me, I just asked them sweetly to wait while I spoke, & it worked because I made it fast. Of course, you'll want to take some quick snapshots, too.

Either you or your sister should bring a clipboard or notebook & make a list of anybody bringing gifts so your mom can write thank-you notes afterward. For people on email, once again thank everybody who attended, too, especially if they paid for their own.

Happy 50th to your mom. It is indeed a special birthday that will be remembered.

Girft Registry for 1st Birthday?

justfine24

My daughters 1st birthday is approching and I know I receive alot of telephone calls with family and friends not knowing what to buy her. I was thinking of doing a registry at Babies R Us or target with items that I know she can use or need. Not sure if that would make it seem like I am asking for things, which I am not...but its better than people not knowing what to get..
So what do you think about a Gift Registry for ideas??

Answer
Most people do registries for weddings or things like that, but since this is your daughters 1st bday, I don't see the big deal, but then again, people may look down on it.

Is sending an invitation to a child's birthday with a gift registry at a specific store proper etiquette?

elia m

I received an invitation to a birthday party for a 5 year old and she was registered at Target, I thought it was a good idea for my daughter's birthday, but I don't want to be rude or tacky.

Answer
OMG! That's beyond tacky! Do NOT do this for your child!

You register for baby shower/new baby gifts or wedding gifts at Target, not your child's birthday!

The parent that did this needs to have their head examined thouroughly. I'm sure if we see their brain scan, it'll be obvious they're delusional!

Buy the birthday child a gift NOT on that list, wrap it or gift bag it, then send your child to the party. Sit back smugly & know that the parent(s) of that child will be horrified that you dared to send a gift not on the registry.

Need ideas for a 30th birthday gift.?

Scarlett

She's my husbands best friends wife.
Stuck up is too harsh of a word. She can be fun, but I will say she's very "PROPER".
She prefers the finer things in life. We are a family on a tight budget.
I don't know what kind of party this is going to be yet.
HELP!

Answer
OK, I would NEVER buy a gift to try and 'keep up with the Jones'. I like my gifts to either say something about me, OR that will be totally different to anything else the person will receive. Money does NOT talk (IMHO). If it was ME, I would appeal to the 'fun' side of this woman. Give her 30 X 30 'useless items' (Because people dread turning 30)......
30 X Spent Matches,
30 X Grains of sand
30 X Used lottery tickets
30 X Take away menus
......you get the idea. It wont cost much...but, by the time you FIND 30 examples of 30 useless things, and wrap them up in lovely wrapping...no one will be in any doubt as to how much THOUGHT and TIME has been put into it - and it will be NOTING like ANYTHING she will have been given before!
The last thing people with money appreciate is an expensive gft -if they WANTED 'that' they will have already bought it themselves! Appeal to the PERSON, rather than the bank balance!
Always works for me, anyway!

30th Birthday gift ideas?

musicIsThe

My sister is going to be 30 on Tuesday, and she's SOO difficult to buy for, she's a typical, modern, independent woman, and if there's something she wants, she buys it, which means she's so hard to buy for! She's outdoorsy, loves surfing, likes music (but I don't know of any CDs she wants) she reads, but she's not mentioned any books that she wants. 30 is a landmark birthday, and all of her friends are away at the time, none of them will be here to celebrate with her, so I really want to do as much as I can.. I've got a key from her housemate and I'm going to go and decorate the house on Tuesday, I've ordered a cake and bought her some wine, but what should I buy her? I was thinking, maybe a spa day, or a massage treatment, I'm not sure? I really want to go all out, she's been like my mum (I'm 15, my mum was ill when I was younger) and I want to make her feel special because she's been really down at the moment... Thanks xx

Answer
How about a dinner for 2 and a spa day. Then a gift card to favorite store or pub or movie house. What is fun also is buying a goofy gift like a plastic water gun. A coloring book or a barbie. Just use your imagination. Have fun. What time should I be there?

Birthday gift for boyfriend?

captured

My boyfriend is turning 18 in about 2 weeks.
And I have NO idea what to get him.
I'm throwing him a surprise birthday party, so my budget is anything below $40. (If i'm buying it.)
I want to get him a special gift though.
Any ideas?

I'll take homemade gifts ideas too.
I want it to be romantic and special(not sex or anything like that though)

Answer
Cheapest, and BEST (romantic) idea that I have seen.

While your boyfriend is sleeping, cut off his penis (not his testicles) and put it into a wrapped box. Let him lament and be depressed for about 2 weeks, and during his birthday, give him the box with his penis! He will be absolutely ecstatic that he got his penis back. I promise you he will remember and love you always, because it will be the best gift he could EVER RECEIVE. I still thank my wife EVERY day for returning my penis!

I need a unique, cute, free-ish birthday gift idea for my boyfriend.?

His 22nd birthday is this weekend and I already bought him something expensive, but it is an event and it isn't for another two weeks. I don't want to let his birthday pass without giving or doing anything for him on the actual day...any ideas?

Answer
You can find nice ideas here if you wanna buy stuff that he will love

http://valentinelovecard.com/pg_store.php (look for his style)

Maybe something like a watch. He will wear it every day and look at it and remember about you.

You should also add some love coupons from there (they are free)

http://valentinelovecard.com/pg_love_coupons.php

You can make these love coupons more hot and more important than the expensive gift. And of course you have to act on it and do what you promise in the coupon :)

Does anyone have any ideas of anything i can send her that is sort of pregnancy related but still is a birthday gift. Thank you :)

what are some gift ideas for a pregnant girlfriend who is 21yrs old?

kelly w

My friend is having a baby in february and wants to get her something special. Any Ideas?

Answer
Please, please, don't get her anything baby related for her birthday. When it's time for the baby shower, get her something for the baby...meanwhile, it's her birthday, so celebrate her!

I might suggest a massage...Many day spa's offer pregnancy massages, which (a) allow her to relax in a way that doesn't interfere with her belly, and (b) will help to relax the muscles that get really sore when a woman is pregnant.

Alternately, there's always the things that the rest of us want, even when we're not pregnant...Diamonds or pearls are always nice! :)

Hope F

My soon to be husband's birthday is coming up and i wanted to get him a unique gift. He is really into his Irish heritage so i got him a piece of Ireland. Its part of a conservation package where you buy one foot of Ireland and you get an ornate land owner deed with his name, papers saying that the land is legally his, a map so you can find it and two pictures of the area that is being conserved. Was this a good gift or did i drop the ball on this one. Last year he got a card and some money from me, this has to be better, hopefully.

My wife and I are planning to take our 3 year old son to WDW next fall. This is our first trip there and we are kind of overwhelmed as to what packages we need to consider. We won't be going to more than 1 park a day, so we have almost completely ruled out the Hopper. Where should we look for discounts? What are some ideas as to how to save $. We live outside of Pensacola, so it will be about a 7 hour drive.

Answer
With a 3 year old I can understand not wanting to do a hopper. As the family gets older know it is a fun must. :)

As far as your quesiton you want to stay on property. Forget the fact that people say outside hotels are cheaper and have shuttles. Know you can pay the exact same if not cheaper on property and the shuttles they offer only run specific times. We have gotten Value Resort rooms for as low as $63 a night during the off season... no safe nice place off property can offer that. Not to mention if you drive it is about $14 a day to park at the parks. By staying on property you will not have to worry about that and plenty of modes of transportation to get you to and from the parks, resorts and Downtown Disney.

Depending on how much your family eats the only other thing you might want to look into is the meal plan. I would either go with the Quick Serve plan or the One Snack, One Quick Serve and one Sit Down a day. Can be a fun way to enjoy the parks even more and eat at some great places. I am sure your 3yr old would not enjoy the fancy sit down places but you can use those credits on Character Meals which I know they would love.

Another perk to staying on property is you do not have to carry your gifts around. If you want to buy something in the parks or downtown disney you can have it taken back to your resort for free. Can make a great way to sneek birthday or holiday gifts without your child knowning.

Overall though, stay on property, adds for extra magic you wont want to miss out on. Also be flexible on when you can go, if you can skip peak times you can save hundreds of dollars. Be sure to book through Disney too.

my wife of 20 years is having her 47th b-day on the 30th,and i basically suck at buying gifts for her! She's very attractive, loves the simple thing in life and love surprises. we have a great marriage ( in all ways! ) very open and share everything together. i need some romantic ideas (anything goes here!) and gift suggestions...I do have some ideas romantically but would love more advice..thank y'all for any ideas!

Answer
Congratulations on the 20 years of marriage. (:

If she's a simple gal and perhaps going out doing the traditional stuff (dinner, movies, spas) is not the way you want to go, I would suggest finding a nice recipe and make her a romatic dinner with candles everywhere, birthday cake and all. Fireplace roaring, glass of wine (or whatever) and talk while she sits and watches you cook. Talk about your ideas for a vacation together, etc.

If having lots of friends around is the ideal, plan a quick surprise party either at your house or a local establishment.

If actually BUYING something is your dilemma and jewelry is not the answer, think of something that she can enjoy year round or a gift that keeps on giving. Golf lessons, cooking class, favorite magazine subscriptions, a Nook from Barnes and Noble if she's a reader (they are coming out with a color touch screen version soon, if not already out.) How about a pet! (:

Just some random ideas outside of the spa idea everyone else has.

My best friend in the whole world is turning 14 in a bit. She recently lost her mom and I want to get her something AMAZING! But Im the kind of person who doesnt give presents easily. I want a good gift idea for someone like her and a unique way to give it to her. Thanks!

Answer
I don't know if this is in with young teens these days, but when I was around that age I know Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul was a really great book to read through tough times. It covers a lot of topics and issues that teenagers face including death and many other things. So even after coping with her loss she can reference back to the book to deal with things such as puberty, dating, peer pressure, stress of school, family, friends... I mean just lots of things you go through at that age. I strongly beleive that this book might help her. There are also more version of the book each starting with "chicken soup for the(insert specific topic here)" but I would say go with chicken soup for the teenage soul. It'll be perfect for her.

Can anyone help with 21th birthday gift ideas?

Q. Its my friends 21st birthday, and i need gift ideas

she is going to america soon for 12 weeks, so something handy for a long trip would maybe be good.

she is really girly if that helps.

I've been thinkin for ages, and i just need maybe good websites or something.

Thanks

Answer
I believe most girls love spa. Why don't you arrange a spa day to celebrate her birthday? You can invite her to have facials, manicures, pedicures, and any other special treats she likes. Or, if there isnât a spa that offers such services, you can hire a therapist to your home and invite her for a private treatment session as her birthday gift. Good luck!

What should I get my dad for his birthday?

missheathe

My dad is turning 49 and I have no idea what to get him. He is married, so no, he doesn't need a stripper. And he already has enough watches, ties and wallets. I'm thinking of something a little more original or out of the ordinary. I also do not want to spend a "father daughter day" with him. I'm looking for something I can buy or make and it needs to be under $30. Thanks in advance :)

Answer
How about you buy him a gift card to somewhere he goes shopping for $30. Perhaps Sears, Target, Best Buy, etc. Or you can buy him a gift card to a restaurant like Applebee's or Ruby Tuesdays. Or maybe if he listens to his iPod buy him some earphones and a gift card. Or make him a memory calender at Meijer. You upload your photos and stick them in the calender.
Good luck and hope I helped!!!

Please Gypsy Girl!!!

He does not need anymore "things" to clutter up his father's space.

If you really want to get him a gift, give him something he can eat or use up and throw away or some movie passes.

Please have mercy, get anything except something else that will be lying around his father's livingroom.

What would be a good gift for a 14 year old girl from Guatemala?

emilyanne3

I am sponsoring a 14 year old Guatemalan girl through a charity. I would like to send her a Christmas gift and birthday gift very soon. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer
I live in Guatemala so I think the first thing you should do, as you were suggested earlier, is to find out the place where this girl lives. Finding out if she uses traditional custom is very important as well. If she uses traditional clothes, she wont be wearing any "occidental" clothing at all, except for sweaters or jackets.
I think a great gift for this girl is a radio (battery operated). Most indigenous people in Guatemala dont have access to a TV, so the radio is very important for their entertainment. A small, portable radio could bring her a lot of happiness and it will be preserved by this girl for a long time.
By the way, the mail system in Guatemala is very good now at days, and also you can use UPS, Fedex or DHL courier systems.

How to tell my dad I don't want his wife to come with us for my birthday?

Shelby

I'm 13, turning 14 in a little under 20 days. My dad bought me tickets for a Daughtry concert for the week before my birthday, but he bought a ticket for his wife to come along as well. I was hoping that it would just be me and my dad so we could spend time together, but I don't know how to tell him that without sounding ungrateful for the gift. Any ideas?

Answer
.....Shelby, while that would have been nice to have some quality time just with your dad, it's a bit late to do anything about it. I'm sure his wife already knows she's going so if you say anything at this point you'll just hurt a lot of feelings. You should just go and enjoy the concert and be appreciative. :-)

I know it's an odd question, but I'm supposed to have examples for an English essay discussing Benjamin Franklin's aphorism, "Beware of little expenses, a small leak will sink a great ship". Only issue....I can't think of a single example when this occurred.

Answer
Born in New York City, Barbara Hutton was the only child of Edna Woolworth (1883-1918) who was the daughter of Frank W. Woolworth, the founder of the successful Woolworth department store chain. Barbara's father was Franklyn Laws Hutton (1877-1940), a wealthy co-founder of the respected E. F. Hutton & Company, a New York Investment banking and stock brokerage conglomerate. She was a niece by marriage of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post who was for a time (1920-1935) married to E.F. Hutton; thus their daughter, actress-heiress Dina Merrill (born Nedenia Hutton), was a first cousin to Barbara Hutton. Dina Merrill related on A&E's Biography of the Woolworths, that for a time Barbara lived with them following the death of her mother and abandonment by her father.

Her mother committed suicide when Barbara was six years old. After her mother's death, she lived with various relatives, and was raised by a governess. She became an introverted child who had limited interaction with other children her own age. Her closest friend and only confidante was her cousin Jimmy Donahue, the son of her mother's sister.

In accordance with New York's high society traditions, Barbara Hutton was given a lavish débutante ball on her 18th birthday, where guests from the Astor and Rockefeller families, amongst other elites, were entertained by stars such as Rudy Vallee and Maurice Chevalier. Three years later, on her 21st birthday, Barbara Hutton inherited close to $50 million from her mother's estate. Her inheritance made her one of the wealthiest women in the world.

[edit] Marriages
Portrayed in the press as the "lucky" young woman who had it all, the public had no idea of the psychological problems she lived with that led to a life of victimization and abuse. Barbara Hutton married seven times:

1933 - Alexis Mdivani, a soi-disant Georgian prince, divorced 1935
1935 - Count Curt Heinrich Eberhard Erdmann Georg von Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow, divorced 1938
1942 - Cary Grant, divorced 1945
1947 - Igor Troubetzkoy, divorced 1951
1953 - Porfirio Rubirosa, divorced 1954
1955 - Baron Gottfried Alexander Maximilian Walter Kurt von Cramm, divorced 1959
1964 - Prince Pierre Raymond Doan, divorced 1966 (she bought him the title Vinh na Champassak of Laos)

[edit] Mdivani and Reventlow
Her first two husbands used her great wealth to their advantage, especially the extremely abusive Curt Haugwitz-Reventlow with whom she had her only child, a son named Lance.

Reventlow dominated her through verbal and physical abuse which escalated to a savage beating that left her hospitalized and him in jail. He also persuaded her to give up her American citizenship, and to take his native Danish citizenship for tax purposes, which she did in December 1937 in a New York federal court. At this point she lapsed into drug abuse. Hutton then developed anorexia, which would plague her for the rest of her life.

Hutton's divorce from Reventlow gave her custody of their son, and like her father had done to her, she left the raising of Lance to a governess and private boarding schools.

[edit] Cary Grant
With World War II raging in Europe, Hutton gifted her London mansion Winfield House to the United States government and moved to California. Back home, Hutton became active during the war, giving money to assist the Free French Forces and donating her yacht to the U.S. government. Using her high profile image to sell War bonds, she received positive publicity after being derided by the press as a result of her marriage scandals. In Hollywood, she met and married Cary Grant, one of the biggest movie stars of the day. Grant did not need her money nor to benefit from her name, and appeared to genuinely care for her. Nevertheless, this marriage failed as well.

[edit] Igor Troubetzkoy
Hutton left California and moved to Paris, France before acquiring a mansion in Tangier. Hutton then began dating Igor Troubetzkoy, another expatriate Russian prince of very limited means but world renown. In the spring of 1948 in Zurich, Switzerland, she married him. That year, he was the driver of the first Ferrari to ever compete in Grand Prix motor racing when he raced in the Monaco Grand Prix and later won the Targa Florio. He ultimately filed for divorce. Hutton's attempted suicide made headlines around the world. Labeled by the press as the "Poor Little Rich Girl," her life nevertheless made great copy and the media exploited her for consumption by a fascinated public.

[edit] Porfirio Rubirosa
Her next marriage lasted only 53 days. Porfirio Rubirosa, one of the most notorious of international playboys, married the vulnerable woman while continuing his affair with the actress Zsa Zsa Gabor [citation needed].

Hutton then spent time with Americans, James Douglas and Philip Van Rensselaer. However, her lavish spending continued, and although she was already the owner of several mansions around the world, in 1959 she built a luxurious Japanese-style palace on a 30 acre (120,000 m²) estate in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

[edit] Gottfried von Cramm
Her next husband was an old friend, German tennis star Baron Gottfried von Cramm. This marriage also ended in divorce. He died in an automobile crash near Cairo, Egypt in 1976.

[edit] Raymond Doan
In Tangier, she met her seventh husband, Raymond Doan. This marriage, too, was short-lived.

Hutton frequently appeared drunk in public and her spending continued unabated. Over the years, she had acquired a large collection of valuable jewelry, including elaborate historical pieces that had once belonged to Marie Antoinette and Empress Eugénie of France. She began spending time with numerous younger men, total strangers to whom she gave money, diamond bracelets, and other pieces of expensive jewelry.

[edit] Final years
The 1972 death of her son in an aircraft crash sent Hutton into a state of despair. Her fortune had diminished to the point where she began liquidating assets in order to raise funds to live on. Nonetheless, she continued to spend money on strangers willing to pay a little attention to her. She spent her final years living at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where she died from a heart attack in May of 1979. At her death, it is said that $3,000 was all that remained of her fortune. She was interred in the Woolworth family mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York.

[edit] Biographical information
Over the years, numerous books have been written about Barbara Hutton, the best known of which are:

Poor Little Rich Girl: The Life and Legend of Barbara Hutton by C. David Heymann
Million Dollar Baby: An Intimate Portrait of Barbara Hutton by Philip Van Rensselaer
In 1987, a television motion picture titled Poor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story starred Farrah Fawcett in the role of Barbara Hutton.

I love cycling and live in Dubai (hot weather). I am quite independant too. Pls give me some ideas on what i can ask for as a b'day gift!

A dirt bike...just a small one to get started and see if you like it.

A bush baby...super cute super fun little animals!

A new bicycle...but an interesting one like a recumbent bike: http://www.lightningbikes.com/thunderbolt.htm
Or a seven person bike:

Or just a tandem bike :)

How about lessons of some kind? Karate, singing, or something fun you want to learn.

A gift certificate to your favorite store is always good...then you get to choose the perfect thing :)

maybe a special trip with your friends?

A laptop?
An ipod?
A telescope?
A chinchilla?
A cruise? Haha
Maybe a trip to somewhere where you can see lots of animals with your family !
