Birthday gift for an ex-boyfriend?

Jewels

So, he did the breaking up, which means normally I wouldn't get the guy a present... BUT he went all out for my birthday, and we are stayed very close friends after we broke up. The relationship was very short-lived. I was planning on getting him a gift card to this nice restaurant we've been talking about going to, but the last couple of weeks, we've been drifting. He seems to be trying to create a little more space, so I'm not sure it's a good idea since it kind of implies that we should go out to this place together. I'm just having a hard time coming up with other ideas. He's going on 23, and I've already ruled out video games and Cologne... Any ideas? Something nice but not overboard and in the $50 range. He spent at least $100 on me, so I think half is appropriate since we've broken up, right?
We do still talk every day. We just don't hang out every day because there is the tension of almost taking things too far. When we do hang out, he almost always comes within inches of kissing me before I pull away. This is what I mean by space. And lately I've responded by blowing HIM off quite a bit. I don't want him to think I don't care, but I don't want him to think I care too much, either. Make sense?
I think I may have figured it out! What message would a cookbook for "single" college students/men send? He has no idea how to cook, he's used to being fed, this would definitely suggest that I realize we're not dating... Is my judgement off here?

Answer
The giftcard is a nice idea but it may be a bit too much of a reminder that you used to be a couple, restaurants aren't only for dates of course but you and him going for a meal might give the wrong impression. He will assume, if he has manners, he should take you as you've been discussing it as I'm sure he'd not be so insensitive as to take another girl and blokes don't take other blokes for meals I suppose.
You need something fairly neutral, cool and fun but only you know him so know whether he's sporty, a big reader or a fan of gadgets for example. It's difficult to suggest a gift for someone you know nothing about. Have a look around the internet,. type 'cool gifts for men' maybe, iwantoneofthose.com is good for awkward male presents... if you've time for something to be delivered and i'm sure you'll find something suitable. I really do think its commendable that you have remained friends, most people are big enough to manage that.

Edit: Wilford Brimley. I feel for you with your sore toe and lack of apple-pie but is this an appropriate place to discuss it? :)

I need gift ideas for my boyfriend's birthday?

He is turning 19 and anything I want to get him is nonexistant :p I was thinking about getting him a personalized capo, but I can't find those anywhere. And I want to get him more than that anyway.
He doesn't really play a lot of sports but he loves to watch football, hes a huge fsu fan.
He loves watching the office
he loves the white stripes, say anything, muse, the beatles, and the used
he plays guitar
his room is red and black
hes really sweet, and he tends to like personal things.
(for christmas I got him a personalized guitar pick with lyrics from our song and a picture of us engraved on it, and I made him a picture frame, and i got him an old beatles record)
I really want to get him something meaningful and sweet. Ideas? (:

Answer
i was going to suggest a personalized guitar pick haha i got that for my boyfriend too =)
maybe you could make a map of your life kindof. like draw first date and the place it was? all neat and such.
what i did for my boyfriends 17th was make a booklet in decending order (ex-8- for the age you act 3- for those three words I LOVE YOU 2- for the two souls meant to be) with photos, quotes, cutesy stuff.
write him a poem, burn the edges, put them in a frame.
i made my boyfriend macoroni art...lame haha but it was cute =)
fsu goods of course - jerseys, shirts, sweats.
if your italian, irish ect you could get him boxers that say "i <3 my italian gf" - they have them all over the internet.
i know there are some of "the office" tshirts, calenders, ect.
you could personalize a calender! there are some websites and you could make each month a photo of you two, mark your anniversary, ect!
hope i helped. good luck!!! =)
